This book was a life changer for me, originally it was written out of loyalty to my teachers and the tradition they had laid out for me.

This book by and large is not filled with my opinions, but rather the opinions of the masters before me. Most of these men had worked 30 years or more at their craft and had dictated to me their views. I am at present working on my own book with my own opinions and strategies that I have worked out over the years. That is not to say that I didn't use everything in this book, in fact I did, and it has given me a life as an entertainer, to which I am grateful. The masters I refer to are of course listed at the end of the book for reference.

Reception Upon the book's First Release:

Of course as in all things, people bicker over details, and so was the case with the magic community over this book, to say it was controversial is an understatement.

Don't get me wrong I was pleased with the reviews, and it was a huge seller, but this just made it worse, I was not prepared for being known as an authority on the subject, when in fact it was actually just the dictates of my teachers.

I had also found out, after the fact, that the opinions of these old street masters ruffled the feathers of the indoor club magicians and their ilk, so I recoiled into my own little world for some years now.
If it weren't for the sheer demand and inquiries for the book, and me needing money, ha, I may have just let it go out of print, and continued my life as a sidewalk performer supporting and enjoying my family.
Another darn good reason for releasing this book is that over the years I have seen how it has changed performers lives and has given us a life and an occupation we can count on.
The information in this book is invaluable, and with all it's controversy, you will see very obviously, it's theories being practiced not only by the most successful buskers out there, but by all the most well know entertainers you already know in all venues of entertainment.

In Fact I have no doubt, that if you have researched street performing at all, you have heard of this book, and many of the masters that are referred to in it.
The masters who helped me with this book saved my life and I believe this book could do the same for you.

I believe it tells the story of who I am, what I do, and why I do it. The story takes place on sidewalks around the U.S. and Europe. There is a certain dignity found in the stories, but the book as a whole certainly does not glamorize the streets in any way. Because it is the real story of the life on the streets as a small time sidewalk performer.

Along with the stories, it has my views on Art, Religion, Politics, and Street Dues.

I believe the opinions of people who make their way on the streets, is sorely lacking in literature. Which seems ironic to me, because in democracies around the world, governments and revolutionaries are always spouting off, this or that, in the name of the poor people, but when it comes right down to it, they never really represent our real opinions at all. Our views have always been twisted to fit the inhuman narratives of various political parties.
In the book you will read about buskers paying their dues, in fact the book is dedicated to the two students who paid more than myself. These students are my pride, due to their commitment and originality.
I am hoping to make a series of these memoir books, as what life I have left here on earth will permit. In these next books I will try to add all of my students, along with friends and teachers.
I have always had a love for magic, but as my closest friends know, I was a working writer well before my life as a professional Magician, and I will be releasing some of my other books on other subjects other than magic also.
I am hoping that this offering of street memoirs will lure more readers to my other works on the various other subjects I was more known for before my entry into the magic scene as a Street Magic writer.

Jimmy Talksalothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09764720229567405896noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7411759329423891571.post-12070560845599776382019-06-02T06:52:00.003-07:002019-06-02T06:52:23.851-07:00Hi, I'm Jimmy and this is my blog for learning busking.

Over the next coming months I will be writing articles on new subjects related to performers and venues for them to work.

I am also going to be updating the blog to make it easier to search and navigate, but for now one should start in the oldest posts, because that is where most of the nuts and bolts of street performing are covered.

I would suggest starting in Sept of 2007 for beginners. You can do that by clicking on the dates of the blog archive to your right.

If you want to know what's going on with me, my products, or the blog you can find out by going Backstage Here.
By the time I got there Gazzo had left. For those of you who don't know already, Gazzo is probably the most famous busking magician in the world.

I met him.

He's English.

And the rest of us just eat crackers and live in his shadow.

My life has always been, a day late and a dollar short, of Gazzo. When Gazzo was being honored by Penn and Teller on their TV show, I was in a run down motel room somewhere, sick, broke, and it was raining.

Anyway, where was I?

Oh yeah, I needed a good place to work, because I was in rough patch in my life, it was the second time in my life a woman had left me and took my children away from me. I was homeless and alone and crazy.

Living in Atlantic City, for all those months, just made sense, it's a town full of lonely, homeless, and crazy people.

So I got up like I do every morning, early, having my cup of tea (english style- black tea with milk and sugar) and a cigarette, on the porch of a cheap motel, reading the paper and judging the weather for work.

As I was reading the paper that morning, I noticed an article about two girls who had been kidnapped, hooked on heroin, and used as prostitutes in Atlantic City. They were discovered when one of them was found screaming naked in the street, in front the cheap motel she had escaped from, I couldn't help but notice the name of the motel, it sounded familiar, and then I realized it, it was the one I was staying in. Of course there could have been no way I would have know this the night before, because it was a pretty regular occurrence to hear gun shots, screaming, and sirens in that part of town all night long. But what I should have known at that point, was what kind of day I was going to have.

As I walked to work I got panhandled for a quarter a thousand times, I half expected the shop owners around town to come out and ask me for a quarter too as I passed by them.

When I got to the pitch, I had my morning chat with a shop manager closest to the pitch. He didn't like me and was trying to figure out how to get me banned from working there, it wasn't personal, he didn't like any of us buskers, but he talked to me for the same reason I talked to him, it was a tough town full of dangers and when we hung out together there it was a sort of solace.

The reader may not know, but I am half Dutch/Welsh and half Hispanic (don't ask me how that works) and I can speak a little more than gibberish in Spanish. There's a reason why I tell you this.

A few shows in, I noticed a group of Puerto Rican gang fellas watching me especially after I passed the hat, and on my next show I saw them interspersed in my front edge and out the side of my eye, just behind me I noticed one of them with a machete, they were surrounding me and I heard one of them in Spanish barking off the plan to rob me. So I stopped the show, and in Spanish, I scolded the leader, saying, You do this to me in front of these Anglos? I have the same blood as you, we are supposed to be brothers, but this is what we do to our own? don't we have it bad enough here?

I said more, but suffice to say. They knew I wasn't Puerto Rican, but they got the idea. Their leader nodded and they left. I'm pretty grateful. Out of caution I moved down the boardwalk.

Some time later, down the boardwalk, I was doing another show, and this lady kept yelling at me to hurry up and do a trick, now anyone that has seen my show, knows there are only seconds between tricks so I got fed up and told her, you know I think you're just rushing me so you can have a reason not to tip me! I took off my hat and held it front of her and said, you want me to hurry up, tip me and I'll hurry. She had a look on her face like she was found out, so I said, That's what I thought!

When the show was over and everyone had gone, there was a lone white guy standing there grinning, and he pulled up his shirt and pulled out a large hunting knife and said, You know I was coming over here to rob you, but you were so funny I'm just gonna let it go.

I was stunned as I watched him walk away, and then after a minute of nothing, an old man walked half past me, and stopped, turned slowly toward me with a hypnotized face and shouted,

"BRING BACK THE ENGLISHMAN!"

Friggin Gazzo.

It was dark, dirty, and old. It was medieval.

I was referred to the squat, by a friend with facial tattoos, back home in New Orleans.

He was a German stunt performer Named Roc, who abandoned his vineyard and apartment, when he discovered busking on one holiday in Barcelona.

After that, the tattoos were just a matter of time.

Barcelona is a coastal labyrinth city of walls meant to confuse and attack invaders. When they were invaded they would simply lock up and remove the street signs and get ready to dump hot oil on lost intruders.

It had taken me quite a while to find the squat in the dark. There was a password at the door, luckily I was provided with that, before I left New Orleans, along with a map on how to get there.

The squat was inhabited by Anarchist Punks and Skins.

In Europe, Skin Heads can have a variety of views, not like in the states where we have either The Working Class Skins Or the infamous Neo-Nazi skins. For instance the Socialist Skin Heads of Europe are sometimes called "Red Skins" (I thought that was funny when I heard it).

Most of the ones I came into contact with had at least a half an inch of hair.

Anyway, these folks weren't racists, in fact quite the opposite, every race was represented there.

But they had no electricity and no running water. That, had to be collected from the old ornate fountains found around town.

When I got there, there was an interview process to make sure I wasn't an undesirable, needless to say the bar wasn't set too high so I passed. They were a little worried I wasn't going to do the community chores like collecting water or gathering food thrown out by the shops (they called this collecting, "recycling," but we here in the states call it dumpster diving).

They were worried, because I was considered a capitalist due to my being a busker.

Huh, imagine that, my whole life as a busker in the states, I have always been accused of not, being bourgeois enough!

The "toilets" amounted to a hole in the bathroom with a foot print engraved on each side of the hole.

There was old broken antique furniture and knick-knacks furnishing the place. In the living room there was a large round coffee table, called The Communal Table, anything left on that table was up for grabs.

The first month I stayed there, I noticed a guy everyday always sleeping in a dark corner of the living room, always face to the wall. He never moved or made a sound.

I never asked.

One day we were all talking in the living room and I was telling them about New Orleans when I heard the guy laying by the wall say something, It was a relief to know he was alive, but strangely it sounded like my friend Raffy (the street violinist of New Orleans).

Then he said something else, and I said, Raffy?! Is that you?

In response he sat up and said, "Yeah it's me Jimmy, is that you?"

I said, Yeah, what are doing Barcelona? And why do you have a beard?

He said, "I haven't showered in three months."

He said that, all bearded up, and proud, and grinning, bobbing his head back and forth.

He said, "The stink goes away after a couple of months, and then you don't stink no more."

I said, yeah I know.

When I first met Paul I was alone in London. I had been backpacking through Europe and was finally glad to be around English speaking people, but I didn't know anyone, and London was a big city.

I had found my way to the London Eye and was working the river when I saw a group of tough looking ten minute sidewalk guys queued up, I avoided them as long as I could, but loneliness got the best of me.

I walked up, and said hello, they all just leered at me and their leader wore an old fifties suit with a black leather biker's vest to make it a three piece. He said, "How did you hear about this place?" I told him I just stumbled on it. I told him I was from New Orleans.

They were all stand offish until I mentioned that I knew Dante, then the leader said he knew him and introduced himself as "Lord Lucan." I later found out his real name was Paul.

For my fellow Americans who don't know who the infamous Lord Lucan is, he was some guy from the higher echelons of English society who did some terrible things and disappeared into the night. For decades there have been sightings, but they never found him. So Paul's stage name insinuates that he is Lord Lucan hiding out in plain site as a busker in the inner city.

Paul, outside of his show, is a pretty reserved guy, who doesn't talk a lot and chooses what he says closely, so what happened next surprised me.

As we were standing there talking, four young thugs rode up on bikes and started picking fights with us, Paul calmly without a word walked over to them and tore them off their bikes and threw them around like rag dolls until they ran away. And just like that he walked back over as if nothing had happened and went back to talking with me right back on subject. We became fast friends. He took me back to the squat, I lived there, and worked with him for some years in-between my travels.

He liked that I had lived in a cave in my youth as a Beat writer/punk, as he had also lived in a cave, down in Tenerife, with similar affiliations.

One day as we walked to work we saw a very old man walking between us. His hair was slicked back and tapered, he had a thin tie with a dark brown shark skinned fine lapel suit, and drab olive slacks cropped with wingtips. As the old guy walked between us we checked him out as if he were a chick, we loved his look. There was that moment when we realized what we were both doing and we knew we were friends.

I remember how he put it, he said, we both love culture. In every major city in the world there is a guy who looks like that town, for Paul it was London, he WAS Cockney and for me it was somewhere inner city USA. Me and him were like the beats of old, we loved real culture, not fashion. The reason we connected, is because in our busker world, or any other scene for that matter, this was rare.

Real is rare.

That day he took me to eat pie and mash, and later to eat cockles and jellied eels from a stand, and taught me some rhyme slang, and what I'm about to tell you ain't a porky.

We were working The Magic Corner on James st. in Covent Garden and I was having trouble with hecklers, my show is scripted and when I would get a major interruption it would throw off my timing. One day the sidewalk guys came up to me and said, "Hey you need to talk to Paul, he's beating up your hecklers."

I said, What?

They said, "Yeah, he drags them out through the back of the crowd when your working, and takes them into the alley over there."

The next show I observed his hat moving around the back edge and saw a heckler vanish through the back of the crowd. I was horrified.

So after the show I confronted him, but to no avail, he said, if I wanted him to stop, I'd have to learn how to deal with them myself in my show.

The next show I thought I was doing pretty good batting of the roaches until a particularly obnoxious one wouldn't let up, he was really laying into me. And then I saw Paul's hat moving behind my edge towards the heckler, so I began pleading with the heckler, even agreeing with him that I wasn't good, but if he would just give me a chance (what he didn't know, was that I was pleading for his own safety). The heckler sensed something was wrong and looked around and finally told me to go ahead.

I saw the hat stop moving, turn around, and go back whence it had came.

After the show, Paul came over to congratulate me on my progress.

This story may leave the reader with the wrong impression of Paul, it should be understood, that besides him being a man of the street, he is a well read individual, with a keen understanding of human nature.

He is a cultured intellectual who can hold his own in Oxford, yet survive in the most dangerous inner city ghettos in the world.

Over the years we had many other adventures, and as I look back on these other adventures, I realize, Paul must have been the best friend I ever had, when it came to magicians.

For the type of guy I am, magicians don't really get me, but he did. We grew up on the streets, knew the rules, and understood loyalty and the salt of the earth the same way.

Looking back on my life, I Thank God I got to know him.

Hey Paul if you ever read this, say hi to Peps for me.

It was on a New Orleans sidewalk. I had just completed a quick six minute sidewalk show back when I would do about twenty two of those a day. I noticed this homeless guy had made it a point to be the last to stick a buck in my hat. After he put it in he said, "I want you to know this buck came from a homeless guy." So I said to him, maybe you ought to keep it, seems like you need this more than me.

He said "No! We all got together and made sure you have it, because you give us hope out here that maybe we can make it too."
So I said, you know what sir, you're right, I am going to keep this dollar.

He nodded once and walked off.

The Best Dollar I Ever Spent.
Years later I was working Atlantic City. There was a bad homeless problem there at the time, you'd see scores of them laying out on the boardwalk begging.

At that time I was doing bigger twenty minute shows so the hats were bigger, and one day I noticed another homeless guy who made it a point to be the last to come up to the hat, but this time, this guys says to me, "Hey! Gimme some of that money!"

I said, Why should I do that?

He said, "Because I'm homeless!"

I said, OK that's great! you're half way there, I'm homeless too!

I said, All you have to do now, is something.

I said, I tell you what, I'm going to give you a dollar and I want you to go around and tell all your friends I'm going to give them a dollar too, But that will be the last dollar I give anyone unless I see them working like me.

I don't care what they do, sing, dance, tell jokes, make ash trays out of beer cans, something, anything. If I see somebody working and they ask me, I'll give, you got it?

He said yeah and went off and told his friends.

That day I gave out a lot of dollar bills, but for two days after that no one bothered me, it was wonderful, almost worth what I payed for it.

And then the next morning it happened, I was walking down the boards to my pitch and I saw a bag lady standing on a crate singing next to her shopping cart, full of bags and stuff. The singing was terrible, but she was singing her heart out.

And a little way down there was a bum, making ash trays and sailing ships out of beer cans, and on the other side of the street was a man dancing his very best bo-jangles, I saw a guy pacing while he threw jokes out to the passer byes, and all up and down that boardwalk, I saw bums trying.

I was so moved, it nearly broke my heart.

I was in a drab suit with a tipped fedora, on a side street in the Latin Quarters. Across the street at a cafe terrace, the snide shrewd French sat waiting, watching down their noses at me.

I was smoking a cigarette and I couldn't put it out. It kept appearing in my hand or my mouth, or it turned into a pipe, or a cigar, or something else that frustrated me. I turned my back to them, feeling violated, but the more I turned away, the more the people stopped to stare.

A man I didn't know, sat on a stoop behind me playing guitar creating sound effects for my emotional outbursts and special effects and a crowd appeared around me from the laughter of the people in the terrace across the street.

I dropped my hat and they filled it with euro coins, I stuck my hand in and grabbed half and walked it over to the Guitar-man and dropped it into his case. He nodded and chin pointed me to go out and do it again.

But there was another stranger on my pitch now.

He was standing, reading a newspaper covering his face, and when people passed him, he would dip down behind them and grab their ankles and bark like a dog, or a monkey, or a macaw, and it sent the victims into a panic, screaming, throwing their things into the air.

Before the victims could find the dog, he would leap back to his perch with the newspaper in front of his face, hiding.

He did this many times and the french in the terraces would leap to their feet every time, they thought they were at the opera, clapping violently, shouting, "Bravo! Bravo!" as the victims looked around.

His finale, was when his many victims, peppered all around the street with spilled groceries, met each other, and figured out that it was the stranger with the newspaper. I saw the victims all point at the stranger, I saw the paper tremble, I saw him peek out the corner of the paper, and I saw old ladies beat that man with purses and umbrellas.

And then I saw the french again in their terraces, on their feet shaking their heads euphorically, clapping and shouting, "Bravo, Bravo...Oh Bra Vo!"

When it was over, he limped to the terraces with his hat out shouting, "you laugh, you pay!" as he collected table to table.

It seemed almost spiritual how the stranger knew them.

I couldn't compete with this anthropological genius, I was just an american with a smoking problem on the streets of Paris, so I grabbed a Crepe Sucre and a Cup Of Tea and started the long walk to the Eiffel tower to work for tourists.

I had been to Paris five times and never seen it before, because I'm a worker, not a tourist, I've been to many cities and never seen the important attractions, but I felt it was getting ridiculous that I had never seen The Eiffel Tower.

When I got there, there was bands of gypsies littered around the out skirts of it. I looked up and was impressed at it's height and looked down and noticed it was based on a giant square plaza full of meandering tourists, and I thought to myself,

OK great, I can work this!
For years I had been watching these One Trick Sandies work their trick on crowded sidewalks, I envied their ability to work anywhere without being rousted by the police. They could even work in front of an open door to a business and be gone before there was trouble.

The method was beautiful.

The real Sandy (who worked out of New Orleans) would stop someone, hand them his hat as an anchor, then pull a small rope out of his hat as the guy held it. He'd do the trick and then tell the guy he made his living by people putting money in the hat...which of course was still in the guy's hand.

Sandy would just keep looking in the hat in the guy's hand, and wait, looking up occasionally then silently back into the hat.

He'd get paid, he'd grab the hat and vanish back into the stream of pedestrians down the sidewalk.

It was poetry.

Well, one day I was low on gas and in bad need of a pitch. And there lay two miles of beautiful boardwalk, Chock-full of people. The only problem? Busking was illegal there, and it was peppered with tough small-town east-coast cops.

So I shortened my show to six minutes, working out of my pockets so I could just walk after I got the hat.

Up and down that boardwalk I went, from one end to the other, using the crowd of pedestrians as camouflage to move. Every six minutes I'd bang up a new audience with the stick, all the while keeping track of the cops and the irritated shop owners.

Then I got confident.

And yea my brothers, pride cometh before the fall.

I had just completed a monster twenty minute show and was shucking and jiving with some hangers on like a rooster, and out of the side of my eye, down the boards there was a group of cops coming, so I turned to dip out the other way and there coming the other way was another group of cops, I stepped forward and I saw in front of me there was a group of cops. So I turned around and there behind me walking through the sand from the beach was a group of cops, heading right for me, they were angry cops, determined and staring.

I was trapped, like the rat I am.

They got to me and huddled around me, and the one in charge said, "Ah Ha! We got you now!"

Me trying to Look bashful, I said, What do mean officer?

They said, "Don't play stupid with us! We've been chasing you for two days, It is prohibited to work the boardwalk."

I smiled nervously and said, I had no idea officer, how can I cooperate with you.

He saw me trembling and said,

"Look, the reason it's prohibited is because, we don't want you congesting the boardwalk and bothering the shops, but you have proven you aren't doing that, because every time we answer a complaint you aren't there. And I like you. So come with us, we are gonna show you where we want you to work, and you're gonna stay right there, you're gonna keep it at ten minutes, and you're going to control your crowd, got it?"

I said, Yes officer, thank you officer, I follow rules officer.

I worked there for three months, the only busker on a packed two mile boardwalk, it was a good run.

Thanks Sandy.

I rolled into town on the bus from Dublin, when I got off the bus, it all began again, my look for a cheap hotel or hostel. Everything cheap was full and I ended up having to stay in a bed and breakfast.

That night as I made my way out, I saw things, things.

I saw a river that looked like Guinnes.

As I walked through town, I saw pubs full of drinkers, real drinkers, not these mamby pamby drinkers we see here in the states. And mind you, this is coming from a guy who hails from New Orleans.

I saw other things, I saw gentle innocent things I wished I could see in america, like the man by himself at a bar stool, who swung around and sung an old Irish song, and all the patrons stopped what they were doing and began to sing with him with arms over shoulders, it made me feel like we were all brothers. I saw this over and over again around town. We don't do that here, people would give him dirty looks and try and ignore him.

I also saw brutal, brotherly, and foreign things. As I walked down a street lined with pubs I saw men again arms over shoulders, cigarettes hanging from their mouths, laughing, with bloody bruises on their foreheads and single blackened eyes and missing teeth, and head butting, they were friends who worked hard and played hard together. And this is where, I thought to myself, I would be working in the morning.

In the morning it was a different crowd, it was families. They loved the art of busking and cheered and played and payed, until that one show, that let me know I should be more aware.

It happened on Shop street in front of the Oscar Wild statue.

The show started like any other, with smiling families. Then two big Irishmen with buzz-cuts and work clothes, stumbled brawling into the middle of my show, completely unaware they were the center of attention, their fists looked like square hammers and everyone could hear the mean banging of the blows into the men's stone faces. Blows that would normally kill someone, seemed to only egg them on. I saw teeth and blood flying.

Then I saw a woman push her way into the show, shouting. She wore a farmers church dress and walked up behind one of the men and slapped him on the back of his near bald head, it was a cold day and it left a mark. It got his attention so she could tell him to quit playing with his "little friend" and come along, they had things to do.

The husband looked at his friend apologetically, searching for permission. His friend had a look of irritation and hurt feelings and just nodded. As the couple walked off, the friend stared at the ground sad, like a kid who lost his friend and finally walked off.

When it was just me and the crowd, still standing paralyzed by the scene, I looked up and said, Well now that they're done with their show, I guess we can get back to ours.

A few days later, on a pitch infront of a pub where buskers and artists hangout, some fellas who looked like farmers came up to me after my show and asked me if I was from the country, they had thick accents with Gaelic words, so I misunderstood them at first, and I said, no I'm from the states, and they said, no we meant from the country like outside of town. And at that moment I realized they thought I was a hillbilly. So looking embarrassed I said, yes. They said, don't worry Lad so are we, that's why we came over to hang around you. So there you have it we are a brotherhood of sorts. As we were talking, a bunch of the local artists from the pub came out and said, we're going to buy you a Guinness. I said, no that's alright I'll just have a cup of tea. They said, yeah that's the problem, you've been here several days and only drank tea, that's not how it goes here in Galway, you will have Guinnes.

I had a Guinnes. The best I ever had.

Galway was a tough town, but I think Dublin was tougher. You can feel it when your there. I had a student who went there and lost an eye, he was on work trip, out on his own, and some young thugs jumped him.

When I first met that student, he looked up to me, now I look up to him, he's paid more dues. When I first heard about it, it broke my heart. I always felt some responsibility for what had happened to him, so I tell you now fellahs, when you come out to these sidewalks,

Beware, there be monsters here.

The first thing one should look into is, City Markets, Village Markets, Tourist Flea Markets, and Tourist Pedestrian Malls.

The places I am describing here are owned and operated by the city, or by the state, or by a major corporation. Sometimes it's a combination, for example, the property maybe owned by the city, but a corporation leases the property and has a contract to police the property with it's own security force.

The reason I get jobs at these places, is so I can live in one place, for a long time, with a stable income. It gives me a home-base to put my family. If I decided I don't want to go on a work trip, I know I can still support my family.

Other advantages of working places like this. is that you have a security force looking out for you, you have a market manager and their staff promoting you, and using one of them as a reference gives you more credibility in the community and will allow you to open other pitches in town.

Getting a job working for tips at a mall can be difficult, what I do is go in there and ask them to pull my name up on the internet and check out my publicity around the world. Next I ask them to audition me. I do this on property for their pedestrians just like I would do a normal show only I leave out the hat.

Getting the gig is not as important as holding the gig. This is something that most buskers can't grasp, because it goes against the very nature of being a busker. You have to lose money to make money.

You Have To Lose Money To Make Money.

I could go to a market and make huge money in two weeks, crazy stupid money and blow that pitch out and they would throw me out of there in a month. Or I could lose money and make a steady income for years.

When a busker goes to a private market and sees the crowds and money, they go into busker mode and blow out the pitch. They build huge uncontrolled crowds. They get greedy and obnoxious and run wild hatting hard and pointing people out in their audience to mock. They use blue humor for shock value. They work close to shops and venders, because "that's where the money's at." They keep pushing the envelope with security and management to do what they want instead of playing by the rules. They fight with other performers over "the good spots" and ignore seniority.

The key to holding a gig at a private market is to play well with others, and as we all know the number one reason we became buskers is because we have authority issues and we can't play well with others.

So what do we do?

First, we need to think about the house we are trying to work.

In this house everyone is paying rent, big rent. Venders have a tendancy to want to blame someone if they are not making money, well guess who is first on their list. If they complain enough to management eventually management will decide against you, why because venders are paying their salaries. So stay out of the vender's way.

In this house they are always trying to be build up foot traffic to the market, all the while trying to stay out from under a lawsuit. So don't go offending people in your shows, stick to a bubble gum show and be more aware of what could be twisted up by a lawyer in court to make you and the market look like villains.

This house is a loyal family who can turn on you if you're "not a good fit" so you need to bend over backwards to fit in. Always remember you are the lowest man on the totem pole and that you are going to be the first to go.

After you have been there for awhile you can begin to loosen up a little once you know the boundaries, but remember respect is earned.

I will be writing more on this subject later.
Who is The Elusive Him?
He is the Character of your show who lives inside of you and your show, and he is just waiting to be discovered by you and the public.

What is Our Mysterious Craft?
It is how Magicians throughout time have constructed their Shows, their Magic, and their Stories.

In my opinion, this book, The Elusive Him is the most important book I have ever written.
When a beginner first goes out he is inundated with complex problems hitting him all at once and he is left trying to rush and catch up with the pros, he is forced to figure out the secret to success on his own. This book hands it to him in a simple and direct manner and cuts his time in half by giving him the understanding of the physical and tangible animal he is trying to hunt. With this obstacle out of his way, all the performer has to do is work on his art and make money while he learns.

This book truly holds The Sidewalk Magician's most powerful secrets.
This info won't be found in the instructions of a magic trick. The pros you meet out there generally don't have the time or resources to sit you down and explain this secret to you. In fact all the long time pros are familiar with this specialized craft and structure, if not sometimes only instinctually in practice, but sometimes they aren't really sure what it is themselves, or how to explain it to someone without any experience. This is what has kept it a secret for so long. So I'm putting this book out for pros and beginners in the hopes that it will not only bring up the quality of shows out on the street, but that it will save my fellow buskers some valuable time and undue suffering so they can start earning a living quicker while they learn our fine art.

The reader here may have already clicked on the preview link and noticed that the preview is a little shorter than they may have wanted, this is for two reasons. This book has no fluff or filler, it is a direct and very extensive breakdown of how show and character work. And I feel the information should only go to the serious buyer who really needs it.
The streets are a tough place and it will take a strong show character to be able to handle all the complex problems that arise out there. Over the years I have looked over the landscape of busking theories, of which it seems every busker has one, myself included.

And over this huge landscape I have only seen tap dancing around this subject, so in this article today I thought I would drag out the elephant in the room and talk about the pros and cons of canned shows, self written shows, and which is easier for character development and handling street problems. I will also be talking about building shows for world travel or for local use.

First it should be understood if one has a Character the street problems seem to just melt away, but let's say you haven't found your Character, what is the strongest type of show to handle Hecklers, Roaches, drunks, criminals, tough pitches, and people thinking your unprofessional and unwanted in the area.

The strongest way of handling this, is with a show you have written yourself. A tailored fit show is always best. The weakest way of handling this is with A Canned Show. Canned shows are less versatile and notorious for undue problems.

Don't get me wrong, Canned Shows are effective, just the least effective in the present, and more importantly ineffective in the long run of the performer's career, for a variety of over looked reasons, over looked, because the beginner is only thinking in the now, for a quick fix.

So what is a canned show?

The Canned Show.
A Canned Show, is a show that you copy word for word and then recited to the audience like an actor would. This show can be purchased by a professional Show Writer, or can be obtained by permission from a teacher.

Some teachers use canned shows as a method to give their students a base to which to learn show structure, or sometimes they are handing over their own show to their students to carry on their legacy after they're gone.

My students and I generally do not practice this. Our legacy is carried on by mere glimpses and shadows of influence, put into our self written shows from our fraternity.

Canned shows can also be obtained by stealing the show of a real performer who wrote their own show, so believe it or not this has to be said, if your the type of person who would steal another performers show, you are not a real artist, and it should be obvious to you, that you are entering the wrong industry, and you will be reminded of this fact for the rest of your life by everyone in the industry and it will cost you money and reputation.

If you are not a real artist spend the few bucks to have a writer write one for you, this will save you thousands of dollars and your reputation. Not only that but you will have an original show.

It is my opinion that the street performer specifically, should write their own show, because they will have to make adjustments to the canned show anyway due to the nature of the unpredictable streets, and if they wrote their own show, they would have already mastered this particular skill set. If they write their own show they will be able to reinvent themselves when ever need be.

So what's the difference, whether we write our own show or let someone else write it for us?

The difference is, it's personal. The audience smells fake a mile away. The audience feels like they are making a new friend when they watch your show and every relationship needs to be authentic. You need an authentic character. The Character is the most important aspect of your show. If your show falls apart, the only hope for you, is that you have a Character to pull you out of that mess.

Finding Your Character When You Write Your Own Show:
The self written show is written by the character themselves, you are starting out with the character, and the character knows better what the show should be about. If you don't have a character when you write your own show you will find your Character in the writing of your show.

Self written shows make the Show's Character emerge, because they were written by your Character hiding inside you. A Canned show was written by someone else's character, or at best, someone who was trying to imagine your Character, but they can't know your Character as well as you do, because your Character is apart of you. And if you choose, your Character can even be you. It's personal, and someone else shouldn't write that, right? Your worth more than that. You're good enough to do this on your own aren't you?. The whole point of busking is doing your own thing. So do your own thing.

What are the advantages of a canned show?

The Pros Of A Canned Show.
It will make you money, it will give you a basis to understand structure, but that is super super unlikely to lead to an original show, this is always the pitfall of the beginner, they think they'll sellout now, and fix it later, this almost never happens. Usually they stay trapped for the rest of their life glued to that show. I met someone who broke out of this rut, but they had to relearn street performing all over again. It cost them time and money. Of course if you are taking over the name and legacy of your master, this problem does not apply to you, because this was your intention, but it does apply to you if you want to make your own name.

Another advantage is that Sometimes if written by a pro, or designed by a teacher, it can work as a generic fix all. But It always suffers the fatal illness of not being yours.

So how does an original performer pick up these advantages? By understanding Local and Universal Shows.

The Local Show.
A Local Show, is a show that has been fine tuned for one pitch. It works on the premise of cultural assimilation. The community in that pitch have adopted the performer as their resident Magician, because they feel he is one of them, he really gets them. The town loves him because he brings in tourists and the tourists love him like an ambassador. The Resident Magician has incorporated local culture, humor, language, phrases, costuming, or what ever to fit that pitch. Resident Magicians are usually the masters of that pitch and may even be able to work an impossible spot where everyone else has failed to even get a crowd. You want to learn how to busk? Go watch him.

The Universal Show works on the same premise, cultural assimilation.

The Universal Show.
A Universal Show, is a show that was written by the performer that can play anywhere in the world. The core of the show always remains the same, while bits and pieces are changed around depending on where in the world the performer may take their show. It is crucial for the performer to be liked, so he may add a Spanish phrase when in Spain, or make a funny comment about food unique to the area, etc. The longer he is in town the better he will get at it. He will also try and play up the advantage of being new and bring the appealing things of his own culture from back home. But the longer he is there the more he will need to try and assimilate to stay in good standing with the locals. It isn't as necessary in super high tourist areas, but it's still there believe me.

This type of show picks up the advantage of being able to work anywhere, and still remain original, with the added bonus of already being in gear to assimilate and put up roots in one town if the performer wants to.

I can't tell you how many places I've been where there are several guys doing the same canned show, I coast through it, but it never ends well for them. The town gets sick of them.

Well, I'm going to end there.

I have been working hard on my new book.
Please be looking for it.
Description:
As some of you may know, I did a lecture tour back in 2011. The lecture was geared towards Close Up to Parlor magic on the sidewalk. This lecture to my surprise attracted a lot of working pros. It was a huge success and I learned a lot myself.

In these notes I cover a varied of subjects that I was getting the most questions about. It includes articles by Myself, Eric Evans, And Kris Bentz. These notes were so popular I sold out of them by the end of the tour. Since then, I have had quite a few requests that I put them back on the market, so here they are.

These notes contain some of the best kept secrets and strategies of the working pros. Most of the folks who own these notes call them, a companion to my book-To Lure With Spectacle.

Originally the notes were just stapled together and a little unorganized. As a re-release, I have cleaned them up, printed them and bound them myself, all by hand in my workshop.

They look a lot better than the originals.
How does a Busker get a raise at his job?

That sounds crazy, right?

That only sounds crazy if your not a Pro.
Today we will be talking about how a new guy can increase his pay everyday. If you want to know how the Pros are staying alive busking full time, you will need to understand the relationship we have with our shows, as our bread winners, and the basics of how we put them together and adjust them, to win our bread.

A Pro knows how to control his income by adjusting his show.

To adjust your show to control your income, you must first of course have an adjustable show.

The worst place to try and make a show adjustable for the street, is in your home.

The best place to put an adjustable show together is on the pitch. The first reason for this is, because conditions are different out there then in your home.

I have written entire twenty minute shows at home, only to find out none of it worked out on the street, and I had to rewrite a show on the spot, just to get through that day.

Remember if your doing this for a living you can not afford to waste time, every minute you spend working on your show you should have the potential to get paid.

Which brings us to the second reason, Money. Nobody is paying you to practice at home. Even if you fail on the pitch they may still pay you, but they can't find you at home. You may even pick up a gig out there while your practicing.

Third reason is you need to get used to working on the pitch, you need to feel at home there. Make the pitch your new comfort zone, make it your office. This will relieve most of your problems out there, remember doing street shows is mental labor, it's complicated, there's a lot of things to try and keep under control out there, it's hard enough working out there as it is. It's going to be easier if you like being out there.

When you work at home those sponge balls stay put, but out there they may blow away in the middle of the routine, unless you created that routine out there in the first place.

Nobody is going to grab something out of your hand in the middle of a routine at home, but it might happen out there.

Some belligerent drunk isn't going to blurt out something vulgar in your living room, but it might happen out there.

That magical moment between you and a hundred people that you've been looking for, isn't going to happen in your living room, but it might happen out there.

There's no money at home fellahs, but it might happen out there.

By practicing out on the pitch you can make more mistakes and correct them. This is what is called stage time.

Stage Time, this is crucial for the professional entertainer the more stage time you get, the better you get. This means more money, more gigs, and more chance at reaching your goals in your career. There's no stage time at home.

With all that said, lets talk about getting raises.

Just like at a real job, if your boss sees improvement, he'll give you a raise. Same thing here, your audience is your boss and they pay for the value they receive.

If you take your three best tricks out there and perform them over and over using the patter that is necessary to perform them, you will notice a pattern emerging, after a long day of repeating.

You will start to see which trick stops them, which trick holds them, and which trick gives the best finale reaction. This will create a seedling for your future show.

The idea is to just keep adding a little bit at a time to grow the length and quality of your show. You will do this by throwing in new bits and watching how it plays with the audience, do it a few times and if your getting good responses, keep it in. If after a few times it fails you might want to think about discarding it from the show or moving it into a different position in the show.

If none of this works get rid of it all together. You can always tinker with it when your not working, but don't risk it when your working.

Every time you add a new bit to your show, you just gave yourself a raise at your job. You will notice those hats creeping up. It will become so obvious you will even begin to put dollar amounts on them. Bits pay a little, and routines pay a lot more.

I have been doing this for years and I am still doing it. It is especially necessary when traveling, because every new pitch calls for show adjustments. Every region has things they prefer, and I want to play to them.

Note: If you try and cheat at this, and do some of this at home, you will eventually have to give up because you will not see quick enough results and you will flee to the safety of a "Real Job."

This is the number one reason why new guys give up. This fact is very subtle and no one talks about it, so the new guy thinks busking just won't work for him, but in reality it's so simple, just do the time on the pitch and it will pay off.

If you do this, and do this only on the pitch, you will quickly start to see a system you can follow, and this system will give you control over your work habits, your income, your understanding of show business, and where you fit into it.

You will become one of us, God help you.
Most of the new guys looking for a teacher hunt me down for this one reason, The Character.

I am going to be writing a series of articles on how to find A Character. Today's article will be focusing on using our mysticism to find our characters.

All magicians have mysticism, and ours is definitely tangled up with trick theory and show character. So get ready because this is where it gets weird.

Today we are going to talk about Magic. So suspend your disbelief, and put away your science and skepticism (all great subjects, but only secondary today) because today we are going to talk about something more important to a magician, and that is Magic.

The Character is the most important subject in the entertainment world.

The Character will write your show and do it for you. The Character will save you when everything goes wrong in the show, because he knows what he would do in that situation much better then you know what he would do.

The Character is the thing that makes any entertainer in any field, the best, it's what makes them rise above all the others, and the beginner wisely knows this.

The Character is what attracts people and holds their interest.

The Character provides all the necessary misdirection without even thinking about it.

The Character knows what to do and where to do it, what tricks to do, what the show is about, and what his world view is.

With all this said, why would you want to try and tackle the severe complexities of a show, on your own, when you could just get your Character to do it for you?

Your Character not only wants to do it, but is a natural at it, so just let him do it.

Why do new guys hunt me down for this?

Well, they are looking for him, and he is elusive, and I have spotted him a few times in my life.

Mostly he hides behind the Ego and fanatical perfectionism. If you push those things aside you may get a glimpse of him before he jumps into a cloud of identity crises. But fear not brothers, I know where he lives.

In fact he has a few residents, one of which is in your past, when you were very young and being formed. You may remember him.

If you're a magician, you have preferences to what you believe is a "real" magician and when you watch an act that hits it, you get a certain thrill out it more than you would from a guy that was just good. Because the act that hits it just right, does something personal, it delivers on your anticipations of what a real magician and real magic, really is.

Contrary wise, no matter how good the act is, if it doesn't do this, you don't get that extra thrill. That act may even give someone else that extra thrill, because that's what they were looking for, but it wasn't your image of authenticity.

So lets go back and look for The Character, when you were very young.

In your mind, you may remember what a real magician should really be, not just any magician, not a guy that's good at tricks, but a real one, can you remember him?

He's you.

When you saw him years ago he was just a foreshadowing of what you are, when you are finally matured.

He may have been the first magician you saw that amazed you or someone you read about, sometimes it's so far back you can't remember exactly how it formed in your mind, but you know who I'm talking about.

Think about it.

So when you go shopping for a costume, buy his clothes. If you see an object he would own, buy it. It doesn't matter if you don't have a trick for it, because he knows what to do with it, and he will make a routine for it, even if it's not a magic trick.

Try and remember him, how does he commute, does he drive or ride a train, or a bike? What ever it is, you will need to commute that way.

What does he eat, how does he cut his hair, how does he talk.

Learn to do these things and have the same habits.

Become him and mature.

Sometimes new guys have a tough time with this, either they have skeptic hang ups or simply are not analytical enough, both of which are laymen symptoms and need to be shed in order to be a Magician.

Note: yeah, I know I sound crazy here, but space forbids from better explaining reasonable justifications, I have written about it elsewhere and will be writing on it in the future.

But the following may help.

Another place he lives, is in the land of belief. The land of belief is a much better place then this miserable jaded modern world we find most of ourselves in.

And don't be confused, we are not talking about the land of -make- believe, that's in a different neighborhood and he doesn't live there because it doesn't exist, heh, that would be crazy, right?

The point is,

Belief, is more effective than make believe.

Please read that again.

The land of belief is not engulfed in materialistic reality. In the land of belief people are free to be who they are and want to be, not what they are told is sane or at least the present standards of sane. In fact many Characters in history have changed those standards with the impact of their will...for better or worse.

In this land, practicality is more important than being pigeonholed in the despair of skepticism and the philosophical interpretations of empirical science.

Or, in short, lighten up, and let go of the facts. Stop sucking all the fun out of everything.

If you use your imagination more, you won't have to go looking for The Character, because he'll be attracted to you. He'll come to your house, start telling you what to eat, how to look, and spend your money, it's really annoying sometimes, but you won't have to look for him.

Many Magicians have a real problem with this and that is why they can't find their Character. How can they find him if they don't believe in him in the first place, duh.

I was once talking to a layman after a show and told him most magicians don't believe in magic, and he laughed out load and said, "Isn't that sort of like a lawyer, who does believe in law."

Think about it,

we are telling people it's magic, and we don't believe it ourselves, ha.

We are telling people our Character is real, and we don't believe it ourselves, ha.

Actors don't behave like this, neither do gamblers.

If your playing poker and you're trying to bluff and you don't believe it, you will leave a tell.

Same thing here.

You can have the best moves in the world, but without a character you won't have a show.

There's another place the character lives.

He lives out there in the minds of your audience and on your face. You see, they can see him, even if you don't see him in yourself.

And they will treat you like your the character.

I'll explain, when I first started out, I wanted to be a steely eyed frontman like my hero Sonny Holliday. I wanted to be a well dressed inner city street smart, dangerous guy, with direct sharp witty patter.

The audience tore me to shreds.

They hated me.

The only time they liked me, was when I failed at a trick, or said something stupid and didn't know it.

Well I got hungry, so hungry I stopped listening to my ego and changed gears. I remembered a character from t.v. named Barney Fife. He was a scrawny foolish deputy, of a small town, who thought in his mind that he was big lawman. The audience would find themselves routing for him out of pity.

So I took the same idea, and essentially I became a Barney Fife trying to be a Sonny Holliday.

The audience saw a clumsy fool trying to be Swift Rico Suave.

And Bang they loved it, and my shows finally began to work. The more I cultivated this character the more it evolved into my real character which I use now.

The point to this is the audience can see your character for who it really is and if your in tune with your audience and you have an understanding of other characters and character theories, you can find your character.

This brings us to The Character's favorite apartment uptown, he loves to live in authenticity.

The absolute key to a character in my opinion, is authenticity. The audience can smell a sham and they friggin hate it. A bad character is a torture to watch. If your trying to fake it until you make it here, just stop that, your killing us, stop, we see through it, stop, please stop.

It would be better if you just went back to reciting a memorized monotone script, at least it would have chance at being so bad it's good.

Because faking a character never works unless that's the obvious shtick.

Any way, don't do that, don't be lazy, learn your character. Be that character. And choose a character that is real.

I'm going to end here, and I realize, I have more to explain, and this is why I'm going to write a series on this.

Also, I will talk more about character authenticity later in up coming articles, because I find it to be very important, but until then happy hunting.

Some people learning the street for the first time, are tired of using canned lines, and are looking for their own material. They want to know what to say to the people, and how to tell their own story. They want to know where the heck the full time guys are getting their material.

Full time guys, are looking for new ways to get new material and new ways of using it to improve their shows. So today I thought I'd talk about my method for getting more bits of funny business, and what I do to put it all together.

Where do you find your own material?

The number one place to find your own material is on the pitch. The more time you spend on the pitch the more material you will have. I have many sources and I'm going to list some of them here. But it's not so much where, but how I find my material.

I get inspired from things I'm exposed to. Like regular people on the street, my audience, T.V. Cartoons, or even other performers sometimes. For instance sometimes other performers might inspire me. I say inspire me, I never knowingly steal material as a rule of mine, but I do listen in my head for the premises and the patterns when I hear lines or see bits. That enables me to turn it around and rewrite it to fit my show and maybe even grow into something.

The important thing to understand here, is that the line will not be the same. I do not steal material.

I'll give you an example, once I heard Tim Eric say his famous opening line, "Smart people show over here, everybody else, is just walking by."

I loved that line so much I came up with an opening line that went like this, "If you want to have fun, stick around, otherwise just walk off snooty."

Later that line changed into, "Alright everybody settle down I'm here now! OK fine, I know what your thinking, so I'll do a couple of tricks first, that way you can see if I'm any good, if you even want to watch me, I might not be any good."

The point here is, the line is different, but the premise of the line is exactly the same, my line fits my character and the theme of my show. Anyone who has seen my show, knows it is not a smart people show.

Another thing one may have noticed from the example, is that a small line evolved into a much larger line, in fact the line is so long now, that in my show, it goes on into a five minute routine.

Essentially what I do, is I say things that are in my head and if the people like it, I keep it in the show, if they don't like it, I don't.

Some of the best bits I get, are crazy responses from the audience when I go out on a limb. After I get this material, I just try to recreate the situation with the next audience, to try and get the same results or better. Sometimes this even results into the next audience thinking I'm a mind reader. I think playing with the audience is always a good idea, the more you go outside of your comfort zone and experiment, the more opportunities present themselves.

Don't be afraid to say things.

Even Hecklers have a large body of material for the performer, just bursting at the seams in fact, sure some of it's not funny, but maybe it has a good premise and just needs a little tweaking.

Another place I get material, is from the tricks themselves, every magician knows that most tricks need patter or mime to complete the misdirection, and guess what, that's material, and that material has the potential to work itself into a routine of it's own. These kernels of patter can be grown into new plots, stories, and premises. Sometimes I even abandon the the effect, because the new story is so good I need to create a new effect that would better illustrate the better story.

Once you get into these habits, you will create a huge body of material that sometimes has to be cut back for appropriate showtime, which of course is a good problem. Having too much is better then not having enough.

I think the key to stringing bits into routines is to make sure the story makes sense. Try and imagine the story as being true, of course it's better and even simpler to string it together if the story is true.

One last source for material is, my show itself, if I need the audience to do something like wait, look, move up, or what ever, that gives me another kernel to work with. I could just tell them to come around the front or I could ask them why their standing behind me so creepy like that. I thought of this line because first, I had to move them around to the front, and second, because they were being creepy standing behind me like that.

Anyway, about this time in the article, many of my readers may be thinking this is all a little too abstract, but I assure the reader, once you get out there trying these exercises, and comeback and read this again, it will all make a lot more sense, unless it doesn't, because my crazy's leaking out again.

Anyway, that was me thinking out loud, have fun and I'll talk to you later.
All the time I get new guys asking me, how to write their own show.

I always ask them, well what would your show look like, and what would it be about.

The other thing I tell them is, that if you know the structure of a show and you know your Character, that Character will write the show for you, the Show will write itself, especially with enough stage time.

If you know the basic structure of how a show works, stage time will grow your show into a full time show.

They usually look at me, like a deer in the headlights, and that's when I realize, they do not know what a Show Structure is, or how to move the pieces around to put one together. So I thought today, we would take a crack at it, at least as I understand it.

It should also be understood that the method and breakdown here described, is for the spoken as well as the unspoken performer (mime) doing a magic show.

If one looks at the numbered breakdown of the show below, one will notice the word Transition quite a bit. This is because a Transition is the vital glue that holds a show together.

A Transition, is how a show is strung together. A Transition, is the thing that leads one routine into the next routine, keeping the show on it's path to the Grand Finale.

Transition example:

If you're doing a coin trick and your next trick is a card trick, before you end the coin trick, pull out a deck of cards, and mention that the next trick, the card trick, will blow their mind.

This makes it easy to go directly into the card trick and not have dead time between routines.

Comedians do it all the time, sometimes after doing a bar joke, they'll say, "Same bar different guy...etc"

Any way here's the breakdown for the Sidewalk Magic Show;

1. THE BALLY ROUTINE-

Transition-

2. THE INTRO ROUTINE-

Transition-

3. THE BEGINNING ROUTINE-

Transition-

4. THE MIDDLE ROUTINE-

Transition-

5. THE FINALE ROUTINE-

Transition-

6. THE FINAL HAT ROUTINE-

Transition-

7. The Final Call Forward-

And here's their explanations;

1. THE BALLY ROUTINE-
This is a routine that is designed to repeat over and over (if need be) to attract attention and bring the people into an edge around the performer. This routine should finale with a transition into, THE INTRO ROUTINE.

2. THE INTRO ROUTINE-
This is a routine designed to make the people feel as though they are a group. This is done by informing them of what is happening, how long it will last, and who the performer is. This routine should finale with a transition into, THE BEGINNING ROUTINE.

3. THE BEGINNING ROUTINE-
Strategically the Magi should put his second best magic routine here. By putting his second best routine here, this gives him room and rapport, because of the strength of the routine. This routine should finale with a transition into, THE MIDDLE ROUTINE.

4. THE MIDDLE ROUTINE-
Strategically the Magi should put his third best (or least best) magic routine here. This will give him a strong finish at the end of the show itself, when he does his best routine. This middle routine should finale with a transition into, THE BIG FINALE.

5. THE BIG FINALE-
Strategically the Magi should put his very best magic routine here. The performer should do the big finish trick, then transition into, THE FINAL HAT ROUTINE.

6. THE FINAL HAT ROUTINE-
This routine is designed to convey to the audience why, how, and how much they should pay him. It should also bring the audience forward to pay him. This routine should be as strongly entertaining as any of the other routines in the show.

Very Important Note About The Final Hat Routine:

Many, if not most Buskers, have a slightly different order here. Instead, they may use the anticipation of the big finish trick as an anchor to get the audience to stand and listen to Their Hat routine.

In other words, first they hat them, then they do the big finish trick.

After they do the big finish trick they immediately do The Final Call urging the people to come forward, usually with a stream of funny lines until the crowd has finally dissipated. This is a great strategy, but depending on your show, or the pitch, it may not even be necessary.

And don't get me wrong, most of the shows I have myself, written and performed, used this anticipation strategy, it just depends on what you want to do.

But remember your writing your own show, you can now do what you want, your not locked into a canned show. A canned show, may force you to do it the way it was written for the original performer.

In fact this is only one way, and only one strategy buskers use within Show Structure to get the audience to do what they want them to do. The more advanced the performer gets, and the more familiar he becomes with the structure of his show, the more he will figure out little tricks of the trade he can do.

7. The Final Call Forward-
This is The part of the show where the Magi calls all the people forward, usually in a fun way to come and put money in the hat, and he keeps calling them forward urging them, until they have all paid or walked away.

This is, in my opinion, and the opinion of the late Great Stuartini, is the True Finale of the show. Because if executed right, this is the climax of the whole build up of the show, when all the people come together to participate in joy, satisfaction, and support.

The Final Call is important if you want to get paid, so don't be shy, let them know they are welcome to pay, but say it in a way that makes them happy to pay. I use humor.

And this is where I think we are going to end for now, but I will be writing more on this subject in the near future.

Also I have some articles coming up, on where to work in your hometown, as a permanent secure stable location, like a full time job, and stories about myself and my friends and the trouble we would get in to.

All coming up, so keep an eye on the blog until I see you again.
Essentially any show is a story.

In order to understand the construction of the story we call The Sidewalk Show, one must first know the nuts, bolts, and strings, that hold it together.

Today we are going to be talking about the skeleton and the body of a show and how it is a story. I feel this maybe one of the most important articles I have written in many years and may solve some very big problems for a lot of people.

I'll begin with terms and definitions, and then move on to how they work together.

Some basic terms are;

Bits, Routines, Transitions, Finales, The Body Of The Show, and The Grand Finale.

And here's my best definitions for them;

A Bit, is a single magic effect, or a sight gag, or a one liner, or a small piece.

A Routine, is Bits that are strung together to make a short story with a plot. This short story has a beginning, a middle, and an end (Finale).

A Finale, is a Bit at the end of a Routine, that brings the whole routine together, gives it closure, proves it's worth, and ends any arguments or questions that maybe in the minds of the audience, or the performer. It competes the statement of the Routine.

The Body Of The Show, is Routines that are strung together to make a longer story with a plot. This longer story also has a beginning, a middle, and an end (Grand Finale).

A Grand Finale, is a Routine at the end of a Show, that brings the whole show together, gives it closure, proves it's worth, and ends any arguments or questions that maybe in the minds of the audience or the performer. It completes the statement of the show.

A Transition, is how a show is strung together. A Transition, is the thing that leads one routine into the next routine, keeping the show on it's path to the Grand Finale.

This last one is the most important of them all, because in a sidewalk show the audience will walk away if there is any unnecessary pause, or dead time in a show. The thing that prevents this catastrophe is called a Transition.

If the performer fails to use a Transition, he will always have some difficulty in the show. If your having problems in your show it's almost always, because of a transitional situation.

Most magicians have smooth memorized Routines, even flawless at times, but usually only professional Sidewalk Magicians have smooth flawless Transitions. This is, because once they have recognized it as being the most crucial thing to hold a crowd together, they will spend the same amount of time on Transitions as they do on their regular Routines.

Bad transitions are more obvious to the audience then to the performer, I know this, because they have told me after my shows, they told me where it lagged and where people walked off, and why.

OK enough about Transitions.

Now that we have a better idea of how to put a show together, let's talk about the show being a story.

The Magic Show, is a story that the Magician is telling, as a story teller, sometimes even using special effects to better illustrate, that what he is saying is true. You have to admit Magicians say the craziest things sometimes, somethings that are even hard to believe, so he may feel obligated sometimes to demonstrate that what he is saying is true, sometimes even with an impressive display of impossibility, right?

If a Magician concentrates on the show being a story, and the story being more important than a display of tricks, so will the audience. The Audience will automatically suspend their disbelief to understand the story, just like they do when they watch a Play or Movie, or even read a Fantasy Novel.

Stop and read that again.

Remember your tricks are only The Special Effects of your Movie. They are never more important than the Movie. Every Magician has an arsenal of special effects, but sometimes they don't understand how to string them together to paint a picture. They don't know how to tell a story which gives them problems with their audiences. You see, when a magic show is a good story, that runs smooth, and is interesting to watch, it turns skeptics into cheer leaders.

A cold display of puzzles is a negative challenge to the audience, but a good story is an invitation to participate. And don't get me wrong, the audience wants to be challenged sometimes, sure, but first, shouldn't they feel like they are a part of something?

Something they like?

A story builds rapport, credibility, and interest.

So when you string Bits together, into a Routine, to make The Body Of The Show, keep in mind the whole time, what your story is.

What is the story, that you are trying to tell.

In theory, you could just get up there and tell a story without doing any tricks and have no problem holding them and then Hatting them. In fact there are plenty of street performers who are not Magicians at all, who do this all the time. This is the key to The Sidewalk Show, if the operator understands this, he is free.

He is free.

In upcoming articles I will be writing more on this subject, to help those that are interested.

I hope you enjoyed this.

Barcelona, that's not my table.

Now anyone who is familiar with my work and my crazy opinions knows I'm against using a table.

The reason for this is mostly, me trying to get the other street magicians to think out of the box.

The fact is, tables are great, no really. I very rarely use one, but I still do sometimes, because I miss it.

There is something about standing behind a table, that makes me feel like a genuine operator, at work, at the office.

And I miss that.

There are a lot of good, and yea, even great reasons to use a table. So today I figured we'd talk about what happens if one sheds the table, Pros and Cons.

Shedding The Table.

The Pros:

Getting rid of the table was the best thing to ever happen to my street show.

Immediately I became,

1. A more creative and original act.

Because it forced me to come up with new tricks, angles, distances, crowd building, gags, visual comedy, understanding of theater and on and on.

And think about it, how many magic acts are there on the street in the Anglosphere without a table? Don't use a table and bang, you're different.

2. Super versatile.

I could work any size spot, from close up to stadium, in Any direction any time by just turning one way, or even turning completely around. Also working a gig was much easier, because I could fit any where and do any thing.

3. More commercial.

Which meant more gigs and more pitches. All of a sudden everyone wanted to hire me. Even other buskers wanted to share a pitch with me, because my act was different than theirs, and it broke up the monotony of the queue.

4. A normal person in the entertainment industry.

Now when I was on the road I could walk down the street like everyone else, stop and have coffee or lunch, ride a bike, whatever, no longer did I have folded tables, carts and stuff. Entertainers in other fields don't lug this stuff around. Singers, Dancers, comedians, don't need to bring tables with them on stage.

5. Stealthy.

I could be on and off a pitch in literally seconds, I can't tell you how many times cops have come up to me at the end of the day and say, "there you are, we've been looking for you all day, you are not aloud to work in our city!" Of course by that time, I had enough money to move.

And here's another thing, I don't have to drag this thing through the airport, or through customs, or pay for the price of shipping, and then storage, and on and on.

Just me and my bag, walking.

6. A real magician.

Because a real magician doesn't need a table and can work anywhere all the time, Merlin didn't need a table. In fact you feel more powerful as a magician when you pull shows off without all the crutches, like tables signs, stage ropes, amps, etc. Don't get me wrong I still love those crutches and use them sometimes, but wow what a feeling it is pull off a show without them.

7. Safer and more secure.

If bad people want to you harm, you can get away by just walking away, you don't have to fold up tables and pack up.

8. Reliable.

No longer did I have to worry about replacing the table if it broke, was lost in luggage, or got stolen, now the only thing I had to replace was magic props.

There's a lot more, but we're going to stop here. And sure I realize all these problems and more can be resolved, but without a table you don't have them in the first place, which leaves you to deal with the huge score of busking problems one faces every day any way.

And this brings us to the Cons.

There are certainly Cons to getting rid of the table.

The Cons:

1. I lose material and pitch strategy.

My show loses table tricks, table angles, and table strategies that may have been more conducive to certain types of pitches or events. I've been to places where another guy's table act mopped the floor with my stand up act. He destroyed me, because his act fit like a glove, as to where I had to make adjustments. I'll talk more on this in a second.

2. Less assumed credibility.

A table adds a certain credibility and is more familiar to the average person shopping, it makes people feel more safe to come up close, because there is something between them and the performer. In short, building a crowd is easier with a table.

3. Loss in security.

Counting money feels safer at a table. Without a table I may have to squat and count or find a corner which looks bad. I have to look completely around periodically. As to where with a table I have more of a station and it's more difficult for an offender to get to me. Also I appear more in the norm with other vendors.

4. Coping with other buskers

This is the worst.

No table always means, you have to help the magicians your traveling with carry their stuff and try and help them with all the other problems they have, because of their table.

I'm still carrying a table even though it's not mine.

You also have to work around their tables and gear, because for some reason they feel they don't have to move their stuff for you on your turn, because you don't have anything.

This is why you may see photos of me with my bag and sign on a table.

That's not my table!

Of course I'm kidding, in fact it's pretty nice the other guys let me use there table, it's nice to have the option. Which brings me to # 5.

5. I lose the desk in my office.

A table feels like my office and makes me feel secure, having a table to conduct business on or just somewhere to put my cup of tea is nice, I lose that without a table.

6. I lose audience compact-ability.

On a small tight sidewalk pitch I can cram more people up to the table very close to me and they don't feel uncomfortable, because the table gives us a nice space between us.

There are many more reasons Pro and Con you'll figure out by experience or feel when you're out there long enough and this can help you make a decision as to what you want to do.

The trick is to not get locked into having to rely on a table, to be able to figure this stuff out honestly for yourself.

And remember if your trying to work without a table, while it's still out there on your pitch, this will teach you nothing. Leaving a table on the pitch with you yet never using it , is still using it as flash etc.

I'll prove it to you, just go out there without it one day and see for yourself the stark contrast in feeling, it feels like your all alone in a huge field, ha.

What I do, to get back the feeling of security, is to lay a rope out on the ground in a half circle and use that as my table/stage.

Well that's all for now. If you liked this, we'll talk more later.

Thanks for your time.
